On my birthday we awoke to a gigantic moving van in front of the house next door, and ours too. Blocking our driveway. So that Hubby couldn't get out to take the boys to preschool. Or get to work. They moved it for him though, and I went out and asked him if the new next door neighbor was nice.
"Not really," he answered. But then the new next door neighbor guy came over to apologize for blocking our driveway, and he *was* nice. Really nice. He explained that he was relocated from down south. He looked around our age, maybe a bit younger.
All day they were unpacking. I didn't see the wife, but I saw a little girl arrive, jumping around excitedly in red water shoes, a girl that looked to be around Surprise's age. Hooray!
Then towards the end of the day, another, smaller moving van arrived. Wow, they really have a lot of stuff! After Hubby got home, we went to pick up the kids, and when we got back a car was parked. In our driveway. So we had to park catty cornered in a weird way, but that's ok, right? New neighbors, who are our age and have a little girl.
The woman then told us that they are not staying. No, they're REALLY not staying. The house is too small, they can't get in their giant washer and dryer or their box springs. The landlord's wife is there too, looking near tears. They are packing up to move out, after 6 hours.
And this depresses me immensely, still. Because we talked more and they are nice. The boys played with the little girl and give her some balloons that I'd hung up for Surprise. The Mother is down to earth looking, not wispy thin or decked out and super groomed. We probably could have gotten along well, and it would be nice to have an adult to talk to during the day. We could have hung out in each other's yards and gone shopping together. Or something. I had fantasies going through my head all day, of finally having a buddy my age on this street where people are either nice but haven't much in common - they're older, with grown children - or have things in common, but don't seem to be interested.
I hope that someone else like that eventually does move there. But I'm thinking probably not.
