Above and beyond..

Today, while we were waiting in the line to pick up Oldest at school, I watched the safety patrol doing their job. (I don't know if they're still called safety patrol, but that's what I rememember. The kids who wear the dayglo orange sashes and help other kids cross the street.)

At Oldest's school, the parking lot opens to a field, then a set of steps and a bridge that goes over a creek. On the other side of the creek is a busy, 2 lane road that is dangerous to cross.

I watched as a small child ran from the school, across the field toward the steps. His two older brothers lagged behind. Two safety patrol members were guarding the steps. I guess they've already been told that their job is to keep this kid from getting to the busy road by himself, because they sprung into action.

The first safety patrolman got the little kid in a headlock.

When the little kid got away from that one, the other one tackled him and held him on the ground until his brothers arrived.

Dedication to the job, I tell ya.
