Hubby and I are both only children, so my boys don't have any real cousins to hang out with and there aren't many children their age in our family. The only one we see on occasion is my cousin's daughter. She just turned 10, and we went to her party. It didn't really go very well. I think she is just at an age where a 5 year old and 4 year old are kind of annoying.
They went to the basement to play while the grownups were all sitting at the table and she came up to tell me that O had chewed on her balloon - one of those small balloons with a plastic stem. He'd chewed on the plastic stem. WTH?! Why had he chewed on it? And what was I supposed to do at that point? He was still in the basement. I didn't feel like dragging him upstairs to humiliate and yell at him. Maybe I should have. I can deal with most things, but what do you do when your 5 year old chews on a balloon stem? Pretty bizarre. It was a very uncomfortable situation.
Some other things must have happened because O was pretty upset and said "Good bye mean person" to his cousin when we left. I think he can tell that she thinks he's weird and doesn't really like him - he's super sensitive to things like that.
On the way home I asked him why he chewed on the balloon stem. I got kind of a convoluted answer, but it seems that they were playing dogs. He and his brother were the dogs and their older cousin was the dog trainer. Ah, that explains everything!
