I decided to keep Surprise in his existing pre-school, and now I'm so glad that I did! The day that he would have moved to the new school, he started talking about his new best friend. The friend has the same name as one of our cats, which worried me for a bit - I thought maybe it was an imaginary friend, or maybe he was sneaking the cat out of the house to preschool - but it turns out he's real.
Right after that he moved up to the pre-K room, and now seems to really be thriving. No more crying or clinging. All the kids say goodbye to him now when he leaves. Whew.
